Aeration and seeding, done in the right season

Packed clay under the sod is the common problem on graded lots, and thatch can build up on top of it. Core aeration works on both: the plugs open the soil for water, air and fertilizer, and break up the thatch above. Seed goes in right after, into the holes where it has the best chance. LawnWise does this in the fall as round 9 of Plus and Premier, because spring soil is cold and full of weed seed waiting to sprout.

Fall suits the grass itself, too. Tall fescue is a cool-season grass that roots fastest when the soil is warm and the nights are cool, and seed sown in fall gets a full autumn and spring to establish before its first summer. Plan on aerating and seeding again the next fall, and the one after; each pass loosens a little more clay.

The four weeks after seeding

New grass seed is the most fragile thing in the yard. Its first roots are shallow and dry out fast, so for about four weeks the seeded areas need light watering each morning to stay moist. After that, water the lawn like an established one, deeply and less often. Keep foot traffic, dogs and the mower off the seeded areas until the new grass is tall enough to cut.

Hold off on any weed killer of your own while the seed comes in. Pre-emergent in particular keeps new seed from sprouting at all. Our aeration and overseeding page goes through the process step by step.

After the seed: a year of rounds

Once the new fescue is up, the eight rounds of LawnWise Basic carry it through the next year: pre-emergent in rounds 1 and 2, iron and bio-nutrients in spring, broadleaf weed control in most rounds and lime in round 8. LawnWise Premier adds Brown Patch protection for May through July, when fescue is most at risk. Our Franklin office is just up the road in the same county. Lawn care questions in Thompson’s Station

How soon can I mow after overseeding?

Wait until the new grass is tall enough to cut, around three to four inches for tall fescue, and the soil is dry enough that the mower won’t leave ruts. That is often three to four weeks after seeding. Use a sharp blade so the young grass is cut cleanly instead of pulled out by the roots.

What is thatch, and does my lawn have too much?

Thatch is the layer of dead stems and roots between the grass blades and the soil. A thin layer is normal; more than about half an inch keeps water and fertilizer from reaching the roots. Core aeration breaks it up while relieving compacted clay, which is why it’s part of fall round 9 in Plus and Premier.

How long does new fescue take to sprout after seeding?

Tall fescue usually sprouts in one to two weeks in warm fall soil, and the lawn fills in over the following weeks as the seedlings thicken. Keep the seeded areas lightly moist each morning for the first four weeks. Spots that come in uneven can be touched up the next fall.
