Rutherford County, TN

Lawn care in Murfreesboro, TN

Murfreesboro is built on limestone. Across much of Rutherford County the bedrock is close to the surface, and a lawn over shallow, rocky clay behaves differently from one over deep soil.

What limestone does to a Murfreesboro lawn

The city lies in Tennessee’s Central Basin, where layers of limestone sit under a thin cover of clay. In places the rock breaks the surface altogether; the cedar glades this area is known for grow on exactly that kind of ground. Where the soil is only a few inches deep, it holds very little water. Those are the patches that go brown first in a dry August while the rest of the yard is still green. Thin turf over rock lets weeds in, too, so pre-emergent in rounds 1 and 2 matters here: it keeps crabgrass out of the bare spots before the grass can recover.

Deep, less frequent watering helps. So does a root system with somewhere to go. Fall core aeration opens the clay layer that is there, and fresh fescue seed fills in what the heat thinned. It’s round 9 of LawnWise Plus and Premier, and our aeration and overseeding page explains the timing.

Fescue, Bermuda and Brown Patch along the Stones River

Plenty of sunny Murfreesboro lots carry Bermuda or zoysia, warm-season grasses that love heat and ride out drought once they’re established. Tall fescue goes where there’s shade. The fescue lawns are the ones at risk from Brown Patch between May and July, especially on muggy nights near the Stones River and its greenway. LawnWise Premier puts down a preventive fungicide for it as round 10.

All three programs share the same eight-round core of pre-emergent, post-emergent, fertilizer, bio-nutrients and lime. Compare Basic, Plus and Premier side by side on our lawn care programs page.

Mosquitoes and pests in Rutherford County

Stones River National Battlefield and the river corridor keep woods and water close to a lot of neighborhoods, and mosquitoes make the most of both. Monthly treatments from May through September keep the yard usable in the evening. For the house itself, PestWise covers more than 40 common pests, and termite inspections, bait systems and barrier treatments are available as well. Murfreesboro is one county over from our Franklin office, and it’s part of the area we serve. If you live on the north side of town, Smyrna lawn care is the next page up the road.

Lawn care questions in Murfreesboro

Can grass grow over limestone rock in Murfreesboro?

Grass can grow over limestone, but where the soil above the rock is only a few inches deep it dries out quickly and thins in summer. Deep watering, fall aeration and reseeding, and regular feeding help those spots hold on. Very rocky ground may never look quite like the deeper soil elsewhere in the yard.

Is Bermuda or fescue better for a Murfreesboro yard?

It depends on sun. Bermuda and zoysia are warm-season grasses that need full sun and handle heat and drought well, while tall fescue is a cool-season grass that tolerates shade and stays green longer into winter. Many Murfreesboro yards have both, and the free evaluation sorts out which grass is where.

What month should fescue be overseeded in Rutherford County?

Early fall is the best time to overseed tall fescue in Rutherford County, roughly September into early October, while the soil is still warm and the air is cooling. Spring seeding has to compete with weeds sprouting from dormant seed. LawnWise aerates and seeds in the fall as round 9 of the Plus and Premier programs.

Why are mosquitoes so bad near the Stones River?

Mosquitoes breed in standing water and rest in shady, humid vegetation, and a river corridor offers both: backwaters, low ground that floods and thick woods. Homes close to the Stones River or its greenway often see more of them. LawnWise treats the shrubs and shaded resting spots around the house monthly, May through September.
