Hendersonville lawn care by the lake
Hendersonville wraps around Old Hickory Lake, from the neighborhoods off Indian Lake Boulevard to the coves near Sanders Ferry Park. That shoreline is the best part of living here, and it’s also why the mosquitoes are so persistent.
Living on the water means mosquitoes
Coves along the lake, Drakes Creek and the low, shaded ground near them hold the still water mosquitoes breed in. The adults rest in the shrubs, ivy and shade around patios and porches. A LawnWise specialist works through those spots with a backpack mister, leaving a barrier on the leaves that kills mosquitoes on contact. One application holds for about 30 days. Boat covers, kayaks and flowerpot saucers that catch rain are worth tipping out between visits.
Visits run monthly from May through September, scheduled so each treatment connects to the next. Swallows, bats and dragonflies eat their share of mosquitoes, but they can’t keep up with a lake cove in July. The season plan is on our mosquito control page.
Lakeside lawns: shade, slopes and fescue
Lake lots often slope toward the water and carry big shade trees, which favors tall fescue over Bermuda. Fescue in humid lake air is exactly where Brown Patch does its damage in May, June and July. LawnWise Premier adds a preventive fungicide for that window, and its round 9 core aeration and seeding rebuild what the summer thinned.
Slow-release nitrogen feeds the grass gradually, so less of it ends up washing downhill. Lakefront clay also stays wet longer after rain, and core aeration helps it drain.
Sunny lots set back from the water often grow Bermuda or zoysia instead. Those lawns don’t need fescue seeding, so LawnWise Basic, with its rounds of feeding, weed control and lime, may be all they need. Every program shares the eight rounds on our lawn care page, finishing with lime in round 8.
Spiders, ants and wasps
Homes near water tend to have more spiders, because there are more insects for them to eat. PestWise pest control covers spiders, ants, wasps and hornets, crickets and more than 40 pests in all; the exterior is treated every quarter, and callbacks in between cost nothing. Wasps like eaves and boathouses, and carpenter ants go after damp wood near the water. We come up from Franklin, through Nashville, for every round. Up the lake at the county seat, see our page on Gallatin lawn care.

Lawn care questions in Hendersonville
Why are mosquitoes so bad in Hendersonville?
Hendersonville has a long stretch of Old Hickory Lake shoreline, plus creeks and coves with still, shallow water where mosquitoes breed, and plenty of shade where they rest. Monthly barrier treatments on the shrubs and shaded areas around your home, from May through September, cut down the mosquitoes living in your yard.
Is it safe to fertilize a lawn that slopes down to Old Hickory Lake?
Yes, when it’s done with care. Slow-release nitrogen feeds grass gradually, so less washes off, and a thick lawn holds soil and nutrients better than thin turf. LawnWise uses slow-release nitrogen and bio-nutrients, and leaving a strip of unfertilized grass or plants at the shoreline is good practice on any lakefront lot.
Why are there so many spiders around lake houses?
Spiders follow their food, and lakefront homes draw swarms of midges, mosquitoes and other insects, especially around outdoor lights. More insects mean more spiders on eaves, docks and porches. PestWise’s quarterly exterior service treats the outside of the home for spiders and dozens of other pests, with free service calls in between.
Does Brown Patch hit lakefront lawns harder?
Often, yes. Brown Patch thrives in heat and humidity, and a lawn beside a big lake, under shade trees, stays damp longer after dew or rain. Tall fescue is the turf most affected in Middle Tennessee. LawnWise Premier treats for it preventively from May through July, before the fungus gets established.
