Smyrna lawn care, season by season

A Smyrna lawn has a busy year: crabgrass in spring, heat and fungus in summer, seeding in fall. Here’s what each LawnWise round does, and roughly when, for the turf on this side of Rutherford County.

A Smyrna home and lawn

Spring: rounds 1 through 4

The first two rounds go down before crabgrass seed wakes up. Each carries a pre-emergent barrier, a post-emergent for broadleaf weeds already showing and fertilizer to start the green-up. Rounds 3 and 4 bring bio-nutrients and fertilizer with iron, which darkens the color without forcing a flush of soft growth, plus more broadleaf control. Round 1 goes down early, about the time the forsythia blooms, because by the time crabgrass is visible the barrier is too late.

The bio-nutrients are in the mix to cut down how much pesticide the lawn needs over the year. That fits the way all of our programs work: feed the roots, and a dense lawn leaves weeds very little room.

Summer: round 5 and the Brown Patch months

Round 5 is fertilizer and post-emergent as the heat builds. This is also when tall fescue is most exposed. Yards near Percy Priest Lake and along Stewarts Creek sit in humid air for much of June and July, the conditions Brown Patch likes best, and a lawn can lose whole patches before anyone notices. LawnWise Premier adds a preventive fungicide for those months, applied before the disease shows rather than after. Bermuda and zoysia lawns in full sun take the heat better, but they still want round 5 to hold their color through July.

Mosquito treatments run on their own monthly schedule from May through September, one every 30 days or so. In a dry spell, ants and cockroaches move indoors looking for water; PestWise covers both.

Fall into winter: seeding, then lime

Round 6 is fertilizer timed for the start of seeding season, and in LawnWise Plus and Premier that’s when round 9, core aeration and seeding, goes in too. Fall is the right time because the soil is still warm and the spring weed seed is spent. Our aeration and overseeding page covers why. Round 7 is another feeding with broadleaf control, and round 8 is lime. The whole list is on the lawn care programs page. Farther down I-24, our Murfreesboro lawn care page covers the limestone side of the county.

Lawn care questions in Smyrna

What does iron do for a lawn?

Iron deepens the green color of turf without forcing the fast, soft growth that extra nitrogen can cause. That matters in spring, ahead of summer heat, because soft growth is more prone to disease. LawnWise applies fertilizer with iron in rounds 3 and 4, alongside bio-nutrients and broadleaf weed control.

What are bio-nutrients in a lawn program?

Bio-nutrients are supplements LawnWise adds to rounds 3 and 4 of its programs, together with fertilizer and iron. They’re used to reduce how much pesticide a lawn needs over the season. Paired with slow-release nitrogen, they support the root growth that makes it harder for weeds to move into a Smyrna lawn.

Does a Bermuda lawn in Smyrna need the Brown Patch fungicide?

It matters most on fescue. Brown Patch does its worst damage to tall fescue in Middle Tennessee’s hot, humid weather from May through July, so the preventive fungicide in LawnWise Premier is aimed mainly at fescue lawns. If your lawn is all Bermuda, ask during the free evaluation whether Plus covers what it needs.

What does “seeding time” in round 6 mean?

Round 6 of LawnWise Basic is a fertilizer round timed for the start of fall seeding season. It feeds the lawn as temperatures drop and cool-season grass starts growing hard again. In the Plus and Premier programs, that’s also the season for round 9, core aeration and seeding.
