Is it important?

Absolutely. It’s one of the best things you can do for a lawn

Core aeration mechanically pulls small plugs of soil out of the lawn. Those holes let nutrients, water and oxygen get deeper into the ground, and the roots follow them down. A deep root system is what carries a lawn through a Tennessee July.

Our soils here are mostly clay, tight and compacted. Seeding right behind the aerator puts seed in direct contact with soil in thousands of open holes, which is why germination is so much better than seed scattered on top.

What aeration and seeding does

Eight things your lawn gets out of it

  • Fills in bare spots for a thick, green lawn
  • Helps choke out weeds and crabgrass
  • Reduces soil compaction
  • Increases root development
  • Lets nutrients, water and oxygen deeper into the soil
  • Improves overall plant health
  • Helps decompose the thatch layer
  • Better seed germination through seed-to-soil contact

When is the best time to seed?

Fall, without question

Spring soils are cold and packed with dormant weed seed that is ready to grow. Seed in spring and the annual weeds fight the new grass for space, and they usually win.

Spring seedlings also aren’t strong enough to make it through the heat. By July and August you’re looking at more crabgrass than lawn. Aerate and overseed in the fall instead, and it pays off the next spring when the grass comes in thicker and healthier.

Aeration and seeding is round 9 of the LawnWise Plus and Premier programs, and you can book it on its own.

Give your lawn the care it deserves

A healthy lawn starts from the ground up

We fill thin and bare areas with premium seed so the lawn comes back thicker, and the work is aimed at the long run: a lawn that holds up season after season instead of a quick patch.

It works. A Thompson’s Station customer told us we “pulled up thatch (no other company had done this) and ensured that it was properly seeded,” and a Spring Hill customer saw fescue come in across a mostly Bermuda front yard within about a month. After seeding, keep the new areas moist for four weeks; the patchy-lawn guide walks through the rest.

Answers

Aeration and overseeding questions

When is the best time to aerate and overseed in Middle Tennessee?

Fall. It is the undisputed best time to aerate and seed here: the summer heat has done its damage, the soil is warm, and the new grass has fall and winter to root before the next summer. Aerating and seeding in the fall pays off when the lawn comes in thicker in spring.

Why shouldn’t I seed my lawn in the spring?

Spring soils are cold and full of dormant weed seeds ready to grow, so annual weeds compete with new grass for space — and often win. Spring seedlings also aren’t strong enough to survive the summer heat, which leaves more crabgrass than lawn by July and August.

What does core aeration do for clay soil?

Core aeration pulls small plugs of soil out of the lawn, which relieves compaction in tight Middle Tennessee clay and lets nutrients, water and oxygen get deeper. Roots follow them down, and a deep root system is what keeps a lawn healthy through drought and heat.

Can I get aeration and seeding without a full program?

Yes. Aeration and seeding is its own service, and it is also round 9 of the LawnWise Plus and Premier programs. First-time customers have been offered $50 off with the purchase of a full lawn care package, so ask which is the better deal for your lawn when you call.

How soon will new grass show after overseeding?

Usually within a few weeks. One Spring Hill customer who switched from Bermuda to fescue saw fescue throughout the lawn a couple of weeks to a month after the reseed. Keeping the seeded areas moist for the first four weeks makes the biggest difference.
