Lawn care service in Green Hills

Green Hills yards are as much landscape as lawn: mature trees, foundation shrubs and beds that took years to fill in, with fescue in between. The grass and the plants around it need care on the same calendar.

A Green Hills home and lawn

Fescue that shares the yard with old trees

On the streets either side of Hillsboro Pike, lots tend to carry tall fescue under oaks and maples planted generations ago. Those trees take the water and the light, and by late summer the grass beneath them is thin. Each fall, aeration and fresh seed bring it back; LawnWise Plus includes that as round 9. LawnWise Premier adds a preventive fungicide from May through July, so Brown Patch doesn’t take the fescue before the trees do. In a small Green Hills yard the lawn may be little more than the strip between the beds and the street, and every bare spot shows.

The eight core rounds are the same in all three programs, from early pre-emergent to the lime in round 8, and they’re listed on our lawn care page.

Shrubs and ornamental trees

Boxwood, holly, azalea and Japanese maple fill a lot of Green Hills beds, and each has insects or diseases that will find it sooner or later. Our tree and shrub care program runs seven rounds: a horticultural or dormant oil first to suffocate insect eggs, then a root stimulator with micronutrients, four rounds of protection from insect and disease damage, and a final feeding for the roots. Trees answer feeding slowly, often over months rather than weeks, so the root stimulator in round 2 and the feeding in round 7 are a long game.

It’s treatment only. Pruning and planting stay with your landscaper, and our specialists work around the beds they’ve built. They come up from the Franklin office, a short drive along Hillsboro Pike.

Termites and older homes

Many houses near the Mall at Green Hills date from the middle of the last century, and subterranean termites go looking for wood near soil. Termite control from PestWise starts with a thorough inspection and can include baiting systems, barrier treatments and annual monitoring.

Shaded patios, dense beds and ivy ground cover give mosquitoes plenty of daytime cover in a yard like this. Monthly treatments from May through September put a barrier on those leaves, and each one lasts about 30 days. A little farther south, in Williamson County, see our page on Brentwood lawn care.

Lawn care questions in Green Hills

Why is the grass under my oak tree thinning every summer?

Shade, heat and the tree’s roots all compete with grass, and tall fescue under a mature oak tends to lose that contest by late summer. Fall aeration and overseeding replace what thinned, and feeding on schedule keeps the remaining grass strong. Where the canopy lets through very little light, a higher mowing height helps too.

What does a dormant oil spray do for shrubs?

A horticultural or dormant oil coats insect eggs and soft-bodied pests such as scale on shrubs and trees and suffocates them. It helps stop eggs from hatching and controls insects already present. It’s round 1 of the LawnWise tree and shrub program, applied before the growing season gets going.

Do older Green Hills homes need termite protection?

Any Middle Tennessee home can get subterranean termites, and older houses have had more years for wood-to-soil contact and moisture problems to develop. PestWise offers inspections, baiting systems, barrier treatments and annual monitoring. The Premium Plus package watches for termites around the clock, and Complete adds active and preventive termite protection.

What insects attack boxwoods in Middle Tennessee?

Boxwood leafminer, boxwood mites and boxwood psyllids are the common insect pests of boxwood in Middle Tennessee, and boxwood blight is a disease worth watching for. The LawnWise tree and shrub program includes four rounds of protection from insect and disease damage through the growing season, after a dormant oil and a root stimulator.
