Bringing back a lawn that’s been let go

A neglected lawn usually has three problems at once: thin grass, a weed population that’s had years to seed itself, and soil packed hard by rain falling on bare clay. Fixing one without the others doesn’t last, so the order matters. Weed control and feeding come first, through the rounds of a program, to give you turf to build on. Fall aeration and seeding then fill the gaps, and the next spring’s pre-emergent keeps the new space from going straight back to crabgrass. Trees on an older lot add shade and root competition, and those parts of the yard are usually fescue that needs reseeding each fall.

The round-by-round plan is on our lawn care page.

Erosion, slopes and Mill Creek

Bare clay on a slope sheds soil in every storm, and Nolensville’s rolling ground has plenty of slopes draining toward Mill Creek and its branches. Thick grass is about the cheapest erosion control there is. Core aeration lets rain soak in where it falls instead of carrying topsoil away, and fresh seed knits the surface back together. That’s round 9 of LawnWise Plus and Premier, explained on our aeration and overseeding page. Deep gullies may need grading first; we treat turf, we don’t regrade it. Around a pond, the bank is often the hardest place to keep grass, because it stays wet and gets walked on.

New subdivisions, same clay

On the newer lots the trouble is the one every fast-growing Williamson County town shares: sod laid over graded subsoil. The same rounds apply, with aeration doing more of the work in the first few years. Ponds in the newer neighborhoods and the creek bottoms on older properties also bring mosquitoes from May on; a monthly treatment lasts about 30 days, through September.

Older houses along Nolensville Pike bring older pest problems, too: ants, crickets and the occasional mouse. PestWise handles all three, and the Franklin office that sends our specialists out is one Williamson County town away. For lawns farther out, see our page on College Grove lawn care.

From a customer

What a Nolensville customer says

We have a big property that has been somewhat neglected over the last few years. We also had many unusual obstacles (erosion, pond, trees, etc..). Not only did LawnWise exceed my expectations on the look of the lawn they also provided valuable information on the other issues we were facing (mowing, natural areas). They were great to work with and took their time dealing with the typical consumer that knows very little but expects a lot. I would enthusiastically recommend LawnWise for anything related to your lawn or pest needs.

Lawn care questions in Nolensville

How long does it take to bring back a neglected lawn?

A neglected lawn generally needs a full season of feeding and weed control and at least one fall of aeration and overseeding before it fills in, and a badly worn one may need two. A free evaluation from LawnWise gives a fair picture of where yours stands and which program fits the job.

Can a lawn program help with erosion on a slope?

Yes, up to a point. A thick, well-rooted lawn holds soil far better than thin turf, and core aeration helps rain soak in instead of running off. Fall seeding fills bare ground before winter storms. Deep gullies or washouts need grading or drainage work first, which is outside what LawnWise does.

Are Nolensville’s new subdivisions built on poor soil?

Many are on graded lots where the topsoil was scraped away and the clay below was compacted by heavy equipment, which is common in fast-growing towns across Williamson County. Sod laid on that clay roots shallowly. Yearly fall aeration and overseeding, part of LawnWise Plus and Premier, improve it over time.

Will LawnWise give advice on mowing and other yard issues?

Yes. A LawnWise specialist will talk through what’s affecting the lawn beyond the treatments, including mowing height, watering and areas that might be better left natural. LawnWise doesn’t mow, but the Nolensville customer quoted on this page found that advice as useful as the work on the lawn itself.
