Spring Hill lawn care, starting from clay
Spring Hill has grown fast on both sides of the Maury and Williamson county line, and a lot of its lawns are only a few years old. Many began as sod rolled out on subsoil a bulldozer had just finished with.
Why new-build lawns in Spring Hill struggle
When a subdivision goes in, the topsoil is often scraped away, the lots are graded, and heavy equipment packs the clay underneath. Sod or seed goes on top. It looks fine the first spring. By the second summer, roots that never got past the top inch can’t find water, and the lawn yellows, thins or washes out on the slopes. You’ll find that story in neighborhoods off Saturn Parkway and along Kedron Road alike.
The clay can’t be swapped out, but it can be loosened a little more every year. Fall core aeration, round 9 of LawnWise Plus, pulls plugs so water and roots get in, and the seed that follows thickens the turf. Our aeration and overseeding page explains why fall beats spring.
Feeding a young lawn
New lawns on poor soil are hungry. The eight rounds of LawnWise Basic deliver fertilizer through the season, iron and bio-nutrients in spring, and lime in round 8 where the clay runs acidic. Weeds move quickly into thin new turf, so pre-emergent goes down in the first two rounds and post-emergent follows in most of the others. The round-by-round list is on our lawn care page.
Some new lawns arrive as Bermuda sod, and some owners would rather have fescue for the shade their young trees will cast one day. Switching is possible with aeration and fall seeding over more than one season. Talk it through at the free evaluation.
Retention ponds and mosquitoes
Retention ponds and drainage swales are part of almost every newer Spring Hill subdivision, and the still water in them turns into a mosquito nursery from late spring on. Monthly visits, May through September, treat the shrubs and shady corners around the house where adult mosquitoes rest during the day. For the house itself, PestWise covers ants, spiders and more than 40 other pests. Spring Hill also takes in older lots near Rippavilla and downtown, where the trees are bigger and the lawns shadier. What a Spring Hill customer says
These guys do a great job. My lawn has improved in overall texture and thickness since they started treating it. I have recommended family and friends to these guys and will continue to do so. I have already signed up for another years worth of great service.

Lawn care questions in Spring Hill
Why is my new construction lawn in Spring Hill dying?
The usual cause is compacted subsoil. Builders often remove topsoil and grade the lot with heavy equipment, then lay sod on hard clay, so roots stay shallow and dry out in summer. Fall core aeration and overseeding, repeated each year, open the soil and thicken the turf; LawnWise includes both in Plus and Premier.
Should a lawn that’s only a year or two old be aerated?
Yes, if it sits on compacted clay, as many new lots do. Aeration relieves the compaction that grading left behind and gives seed a place to take root. Fall is the time for it. There’s no reason to wait for the lawn to age, because the soil underneath is the problem, not the grass.
Is Spring Hill in Williamson or Maury County?
Both. Spring Hill straddles the line between Maury County and Williamson County, south of Thompson’s Station. LawnWise serves the whole city from its office in Franklin, so the county your address falls in doesn’t change the lawn programs, pest packages or mosquito treatments you can choose from.
Will mosquito treatment help if there’s a retention pond behind my house?
It helps in your yard. LawnWise treats the shrubs, ground cover and shaded spots around your home where adult mosquitoes rest, with a barrier that lasts about 30 days. Mosquitoes that breed in a nearby pond spend their days in exactly that kind of cover, so the treatment catches them where they land.
